![]() Spending some time on the beach – There are plenty of spots to park your car, walk a few yards and then find that perfect place to unpack your shovel and buckets. ![]() This area on the eastern side of the island got its name because Hurricane Hugo washed away the homes there in 1989, and now the wind brings in some of the best surfing waves along the Palmetto State’s shores. ![]() Watching the surfers at The Washout – While there is a restaurant on the island named The Washout, the name’s real fame is as a surfing spot. This is also a great place to find tidal pools with hermit crabs. This shell, with its olive shape, was named the official state shell in 1984. There’s a spot on the walk, in between two man-made seawalls, where shells are plentiful and it’s easy to nab several of South Carolina’s state seashell – the Lettered Olive. Shell searching – From the Morris Island Lighthouse, you can walk back to your car on the asphalt path or you can walk on the beach. From one of the many spots on this landmark that reaches more than 1,000 feet into the surf, you can drop a line (rentals are available) and snag anything from a small whiting to a large king mackerel (the pier record is 44-pounds, 14 ounces). Here are 10 activities that will definitely give parents and children a much-needed coastal reprieve:įishing on the Folly Beach Pier – There are breathtaking views to take in here at the “Edge of America,” but enjoying the view is more fun with a fishing rod in your hand. If you have kids, this is a great spot to go for a day trip as there are plenty of activities on Folly Beach or nearby in Charleston to ensure sleepiness on the drive home. One of the best spots is Folly Beach, located just outside of Charleston, only a three hour or so trip from Spartanburg. ![]() When that happens, there are plenty of places to fill the need along the South Carolina coast that are only a few hours’ drive away. Some days, you just need to feel the ocean breeze on your face and warm sand between your toes. ![]()
